There is something electrifying about New York Fashion Week- the energy, the creativity, the organized chaos. But being one of the only female photographers in the pit, capturing moments from both the runway and behind the scenes, adds a unique layer to the experience. I wasn't just there snapping photos- I was on a mission, both personally and professionally, to capture stories through my lens in a world that still feels so overwhelmingly male-dominated and to network with as many people as I could. And man oh man...did I!!!

This year, I had the honor of working with the incredible designer Jenny Heins, who presented her new Cruise Collection- a stunning palette of bright colors and sleek designs that screamed luxury and escapism. Capturing the spirit of her collection as it came to life on the runway was exhilarating. Every look, every detail, every model walking with purpose and poise (she gave them clear directions before hand as to what she wanted them to do with their faces)- I was there to freeze those moments in time. As a photographer, there's nothing quite like seeing a designers vision unfold through my lens.

My NYFW duties didn't stop there. I was also working behind the scenes with Francesca Cable, filming content for her segment on Operation American Dream TV. Francesca is not only a powerhouse in her own right, but her passion for sharing meaningful stories about military life and the spouses that walk the runway. It was an unforgettable experience. Watching her bring the hustle and heart of NYFW to life for her audience, while capturing those candid behind-the-scenes moments, felt like being a part of something bigger-- a movement of voices that refused to be silenced. Seems like I should add some women empowerment quote here, but Ill just let it be.

Navigating a Male-Dominated Space

Being a female photographer in the fast-paced world of fashion photography isn't without its challenges. It can sometimes feel like you're overlooked or underestimated, especially in high pressure environments like Fashion Week. You're constantly navigating through a sea of male photographers, trying to stake my claim in the press pit or find the perfect angle amidst the chaos. The beauty of it all lies in those small moments, quiet wins-- like nailing the perfect shot or capturing a candid moment that no one else saw.

The thing is, being one of the few women behind the lens isn't just about getting a shot: its about shifting perspectives. As a woman, I think we see the world differently, and that translates into how we tell stories through our work. There's a certain empathy and sensitivity that I bring to my photography- whether it's highlighting the intricate craftsmanship of Jenny Heins' designs or capturing Francesca Cable's authentic moments of joy.

A New Lens for Fashion Week

NYFW isn't just about fashion- its about creativity, collaboration, and pushing boundaries. Being a female photographer in this space allows me to tell stories that need to be seen. Through my lens, I aim to capture not just clothing, but emotions, relationships and the people behind the scenes making it all happen.

The world of fashion photography is changing, albeit slowly. Women are stepping into roles traditionally dominated by men, and we're bringing something new to the table. Being part of that shift is not only empowering - it's necessary. There is room for more voices, more perspectives, and more stories told from the female gaze.

Closing Thoughts

New York Fashion Week was chaotic, demanding, and downright exhausting at times. It is also magical. Being one of the only female photographers out there this season felt like both a challenge and a horror. I'm grateful to have worked with incredible talents like Jenny Heins and Francesca Cable, both whom reminded me why representation- whether on the runway, in the audience, or behind the camera- matters so much. Sometimes I forget to take pics of myself doing all the things and I get a little down that everyone else has amazing pics but i don't, just to remember that just being there is enough.

Every click of the shutter is a small act of rebellion- a reminder that women belong in every space, especially those that weren't originally designed for us. So here is to more women being behind the lens, more stories being told from new perspectives, and a future where our presences isn't the exception but the norm.

If you've ever doubted your place in a space that feels too crowded or not designed for you, I am here to tell you- keep going. Find your angle, capture your moment, and let the world see things through your lens. Because trust me the view is worth it and I believe in you.
