“Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” – Bill Cunningham
Ask anyone what they imagine a fashion photographer’s life looks like, and they’ll probably picture flashing lights, glamorous models, and champagne at fancy after-parties. Close your eyes and think of the movie “The Devil wears Parada”.
Sure, there’s a little of that (emphasis on little), but the real story? It’s a whirlwind of creative chaos, constant hustle, and an occasional money shot.
Let’s take a peek behind the lens and see what it really takes to thrive in this fast-paced, high-pressure world.
1. Research: The Crystal Ball of Fashion
Before you can capture the look, you need to know the vibe. Fashion photography is all about staying ahead of the trends, which means endless research and countless reels to watch. It’s not just scrolling Instagram (though, let’s be honest, that’s part of it). It’s about:
• Predicting trends: What’s hot on the runway today will influence tomorrow’s editorials.
• Understanding aesthetics: Are we feeling Y2K glam or cottagecore chic this season? I had to do my research on what exactly these two meant, but I promise you that I am here for both of them!
• Studying the greats: Knowing how icons like Annie Leibovitz( her picture of Whoopie Goldberg in the tub has a lways been one of my favorites) and Mario Testino(I learned about him through my obsession with Princess Diana. His photos of her a flawless) crafted their magic.
Research isn’t glamorous, but it’s where the seeds of creativity are planted. After all, even Picasso had to learn the rules before breaking them.

2. Creative Chaos: From Vision to Reality
Every shoot begins as a dreamy idea scribbled on a napkin probably from Chick-Fil- A —or more realistically, a Pinterest board with an alarming amount of neon and glitter. The process looks like this:
• Conceptualizing: Creating mood boards that scream editorial gold. Think big then dream BIGGER!!!
• Team Building: It takes a village—stylists, makeup artists, models, and sometimes even a llama (hey, fashion is unpredictable). But be selective in your people, connect with people who will challenge you and encourage you.
• Logistics Mastery: Booking locations, coordinating schedules, and figuring out how to transport 15 gowns without wrinkling them, now that is magic that can’t be put into words.
The result? That one shot where everything clicks, and you know you’ve nailed it.
3. Gear Galore: The Tools of the Trade
“You must have a great camera,” people say. Well, sure—but a good camera is just the tip of the iceberg. Your gear bag is your toolbox, and it’s packed with:
• Cameras & Lenses: Wide-angle for drama, prime lenses for sharp portraits, and a backup for when things go sideways.
• Lighting Equipment: Natural light is dreamy, but studio lighting is the boss ( this is an entire other blog post)
